A bonus is something extra like money which you receive for doing an exceptionally good job. A bonus can be awarded over a short period of time. A bonus must be earned.
Think about this the next time you have the opportunity to go above and beyond. Think about it the next time a coworker or employee does an exceptional job.
Questions for Reflection:
What can an employee do to increase the chance of receiving a bonus?
How would receiving a bonus change that employee’s behavior?
How can this be used to increase employee morale, and productivity?

A worker is put on probation when he is newly hired, promoted, or if his job performance has not been up to standard. It is usually for a specified short period of time during which the employee is given closer than usual supervision and normally doesn’t last more than 30 days.
A new employee’s probation is to allow him to learn his job and become familiar with company policy. For the same reasons, a newly promoted worker is given time to learn his new job. When an employee is put on probation because his work and/or work habits are not satisfactory, probation gives him an opportunity to improve and become the valuable employee his is capable of being.
Questions for Reflection:
Have you ever been on probation? What was the cause?
What are some of the reasons employees may be put on probation at your company?
If an employee is put on probation, how would that change their behavior?

Capital is money that is used by an individual or a business enterprise to make more money. It is usually differentiated from savings, but savings can be considered capital if the savings are to be employed actively in some business venture. Throughout history, there has always been a shortage of capital.

Questions for Reflection:
Where could your business gain more capital?
What could this capital be used for?
Who benefits from your business gaining capital?

Faith is the belief in yourself that you can do the job. It is one quality the employer has when he hires you. He believes that YOU can do the job. It is also the belief and the trust that you have in others with whom you work. you believe that the work you receive from other departments is acceptable, correct, and as specified.
Faith can be developed… especially with good cooperative fellow workers whom you can trust.

Immaturity means not being able to deal with problems in an adult way. Immaturity means not being able to see the world and the job and business as they really are. Many times immaturity is caused by ignorance, lack of experience, or a lack of understanding the proper way to solve a problem.
On the job, an immature attitude is the attitude of doing one’s own thing at the cost of others, such as coming in late for work because you stayed out late the night before.

An attitude of immaturity can be carried throughout a lifetime regardless of the age of a person. Immaturity is over-reacting to a situation, feeling sorry for yourself (self-pity), or feeling that the world owes you a living, or acting like a spoiled child when you don’t get your way. Immaturity means not developing your emotions and actions as you become older. Immaturity means handling adult and grown-up problems and situations in a babyish way.

A professional is the expert, the individual who does the outstanding job, the person you turn to when you want a job done right.
The professional knows his job and the best and most economical way of doing it, and does it in just that way. A professional has pride in his work, his company and himself. To be called a professional is a very great compliment.
If someone were to categorize you, do you think they would categorize you as a “professional?” Do you do a professional job? Do you act professionally with your co-workers? Do you act professionally with clients or customers?
Professionalism is one of the things disappearing in business nowadays. It’s great to be informal and friendly with clients you’ve known for years; you’ve already built a reputation with them. However, new clients will be building new ideas on your behavior, work ethic, and personality. They base this on how you present yourself.
You usually only get one shot to give a “first impression.”
Make sure it’s a professional one.

Where were you at the beginning of this year?
What have you learned over the past 52 weeks?
What would you have done more of? Less of?
Are you a better person than the 2012 version of you?
Did you increase your worth? Decrease it?
What about your business? Did it increase in worth? Decrease?
I
f you cannot yet answer these questions, then you need to do an Annual Review. Once you get in the habit, future annual reviews of your successes and failures, and what progress you have made, will be easy. The first one may be a little difficult, but it’s worth it. If you don’t know where you have been this past year, how will you know where you are going, and when you will get there? Take the next two week to see if you can answer the questions above. Once you have answered them, it is time to think about where you want to be 52 weeks from now.
What do you want to have learned by the beginning of 2015?
What will you do more of next year? Less of?
Do you want to increase your net worth?
What about your business worth?
Remember- it will be more difficult to increase your worth in 2014 than it was in 2013, but we can help you through it.
Let us know in the comments how you’ve done this past year, and what your plan is for 2014.

Today, we’ll continue looking at what a plan is:
Every business must plan for additional sales, profits, expansion, new products … for growth. Overall planning of running the business is a key function of management. In today’s times, with so many outside forces and pressures acting on a business, management must spend more time in this area than in the past. Plans are based on outside data and facts as well as from operational information reports submitted regularly by departments and sub-departments. With today’s technological advancements, intense competition is always a key factor that must be planned for in the strategic thinking that is done.

A plan is a program of action. It is a step-by-step method of running a business to realize the accomplishment of certain goals and objectives.
A plan will provide for various contingencies. If we have so much in sale and make so much profit, we will build a new plant, buy new machinery, hire more people, etc. If we do not realize this goal, we will be forced to lay off this many people, or cut back on this new product, or even go out of business.
There are very few successful businesses that left growth to chance. A plan requires that it be reviewed every so often and determine if objectives are being met, and if not, what must be done to get back on the track. A review will also determine if the plan needs to be updated and new goals established. The plan should be reviewed at every fiscal quarter.
Come back next time for Part II!
