Success Consists Of...

Having Positive “Mental Attitude”

28 May 2013 by Laddie F. Hutar

Today, we are giving
another term from our book, “How to Understand Your Job Better:
Hutar Job and Business Terms,” available for sale here
on the website
.

Mental Attitude

Mental Attitude is the manner in which you approach your job every day, all the time. A positive mental attitude will allow you to face each situation or problem in a “can-do, can-solve” manner. On the other hand, a negative mental attitude will cause you to give up- let somebody else do it. When considering individuals for promotion, managers want to know what their mental attitude is. Does he (she) find solutions or create problems? Is he (she) a “can-do” or “that’s not my job” kind of person? The proper or positive mental attitude will ensure your growth and development. This positive attitude can be cultivated through earnest desire and by concentrating more of our thoughts on the many, many positives around us and within us.

Questions for Reflection:
How would you describe your mental attitude?
Do you know someone with a postive attitude? How successful are they?
Do you know someone with a negative attitude? How successful are they?

Effort

26 March 2013 by Laddie F. Hutar

Today, we are giving another term from our book, “How to Understand Your Job Better: Hutar Job and Business Terms,” available for sale here on the website.

Effort
Effort is the amount of thought and energy put out to do something. In most cases an employee has an abundance of reserve energy. Effort is not only physical but mental. In a growth company all effort is expended either by individuals or groups- or by the entire company. A “gung-ho” company doesn’t let any grass grow under its feet. It is the company that’s “on the ball.”

Many times the right effort is not expended because of bad habits or poor training, not realizing what degree of effort should be used to do the job. Studies have shown that individuals use only ten to twenty percent of the total energy or effort potential.

Effort is another way of saying, “You get out of life what you put into it.” If you work hard, you’re dedicated to your job, you have the desire and ability to accept additional authority and responsibility, you will have a rich, full and rewarding life.

Everything in life takes effort- from getting up in the morning to eating your evening meal, and the expending of effort is good and healthy. It is necessary to expend effort and energy to stay healthy, to stay alert, to be in situations where “life is happening.”

Questions for Reflection:
What is your personal reward for putting forth the effort to do a good job?
How does your health effect how much effort you can give?
Are you happy with where you are in life? How much effort would it take to get there?

Attitude

12 March 2013 by Laddie F. Hutar

Today, we are giving another term from our book, “How to Understand Your Job Better: Hutar Job and Business Terms,” available for sale here on the website.

While reading the definition, absorb what it’s saying, and try to determine how it applies to you. Be honest- nobody is grading this test, and honesty here will help you determine where you may need to improve in the future.

Attitude

Attitude is the way you feel toward or about something: about a job, about work, about life.
A positive attitude: a glass is half full.
A negative attitude: a glass is half empty.

The kind of attitude you have towards work, your job, towards the company, towards life, will determine how rapidly you progress in your job.

The proper attitude for a successful working career is an attitude where you feel positive about life, about your job, your company and about yourself. You’re mature in your understanding that work is necessary, and that the world does not owe anyone a living. You have a positive attitude in terms of understanding that you must have cooperation with other employees in the company. You have a feeling of pride in what you do. Attitude is one of the most important assets you possess. Your attitudes can be controlled by yourself.

Questions for Reflection:
What is your attitude in daily life? Be honest!
Can one with a positive attitude gain anything by improving it further?
How can you improve your attitude?

Internet Basics

26 February 2013 by Laddie F. Hutar

You may use the internet, but are you familiar with the different aspects of browsing the web? Let’s go over a few definitions and analogies to help you be a more useful employee, and web user:

The World Wide Web
Sometimes called, “the information superhighway,” the world wide web (www) consists of many different websites- a collection of pages you can view on your computer through a web browser.

Web BrowserThis is the software program you use on your computer to view web pages. If the World Wide Web were the different towns you can visit, the web browser would be your car. It is the vehicle through which you see all the sights on the world wide web.

Some examples would be:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Mozilla Firefox
Google Chrome
Apple Safari
Opera Browser

Internet Service Provider
This is the company that provides your connection to the internet. You could say your ISP makes up the “streets and highways” of the internet. They provide the means to open you up to the rest of the world, so you are capable of visiting all these wonderful websites, like www.hutar.com. You might receive internet service from any number of companies, such as AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, or one of many regional ISPs.

Search Engine
This is a website that indexes the most popular pages on the web, and categorizes them for you by keyword so you can find them easier, and discover new websites.

Some examples would be:
Google
Bing
Yahoo
Ask.com

Guiding Your Customers

29 January 2013 by Laddie F. Hutar

You’re somebody’s customer. We all are! Every human being that is able to read this has had to purchase something from someone, and that makes you their customer. Think back to the last time you visited a bricks and mortar store. How was the customer service? Were you put first? You can use this experience to analyze what works for you as a customer, and what does not. What happened when you asked an employee a question? What was the response? Was it helpful to YOU or to THEM?

Let’s imagine, for a moment, that you are shopping for a washing machine in your favorite appliance store. You find a machine you like, but do not know the price. You find an employee that just happens to be walking by at that moment, and you say to them, “Excuse me, what is the price of this unit?” The employee responds, “I don’t work in this department. You’ll have to ask Joe. He’s five aisles down, helping in the vacuum cleaner department.” This is a response that is helpful to HIM. He may feel good about helping you, and it did not take him much time. However, it is now up to you to find Joe’s whereabouts, and ask him yourself. This is not helpful to YOU. It is not user-friendly.

A good employee would respond, “I don’t work in this department, but Joe does. I can take you to him.” After finding Joe, the employee says to him, “Hi, this person has a few questions about the washing machines.” at which point Joe can now take over and help you.

The first employee deflected your question to someone else, leaving you to find the answer yourself. The second employee PERSONALLY guided you to the right person.

Make sure, if you’re involved with selling, you’re not deflecting questions from customers. If you are not the right employee to help, you need to GUIDE them to someone who can provide the right courteous service. This is good customer help and your customers will appreciate this thoughtfulness. They will remember it as they finalize their buying decision.

Questions for Reflection:
If you were a customer of your business, would you be pleased with the service?
How can you help guide your customers?

During my 77,000 hours of personal consulting, there were many, many, many little daily victories that, over time, resulted in big successes.

Saying “I really appreciate your business”

16 January 2013 by Laddie F. Hutar

Notice I did not write, “Success Consists of Thanking your Customers.” Showing appreciation is much more than just thanking them for their business. Everyone says “thank you.” All of your competition thanks their customers for their business, thanks their customers for working with them, and thanks their customers for recommending them. “Thank you” has become a very overused phrase. It’s vanilla. It’s passe. Make 2013 the year that you appreciate your customers.

I really appreciate your business” is superior to “thank you for your business,” partly because it’s not used as often. People don’t hear it. It’s more memorable, and shows a deeper interest in the person.

One of the definitions for “thanks” in the Oxford dictionary is:
plural noun- “an expression of gratitude.”

Contrast that with the definition for “appreciation” in the same dictionary:
“recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something”

See that? RECOGNITION. You are more fully recognizing your customers. You are establishing a closer bond with the person, and helping validate their contribution to your organization.

When you tell a customer, co-worker, or business contact you “appreciate their business / input / thoughts,” make sure to be SINCERE. It does no good to be phony with people. People are hungry for sincere, true recognition. Make sure to slow down your speech just a bit, make eye contact, and enunciate:

I really appreciate your business.”

Questions for Reflection:
Do your customers know you appreciate them? How?
What does your word choice say about your customer service?
