Handing Out Business Cards

17 July 2012 by Laddie F. Hutar

The First Card

When you’ve met a potential business associate or client, how many business cards do you hand them?

Usually, people will hand someone a single card. A single card allows a new contact to have your information, including (maybe) your email, phone number, and a reminder of what you do. The savvy businessman may write on the back of the card, indicating where they met you, and what you spoke about. At this point, many people file the card, if there is no immediate interest. Others may take short-term action, like taping it to their monitor, or putting it on a desk to deal with later. Some might even misplace it. What do all these actions have in common? They all pertain SOLELY to the individual you handed the card to.

The Life of a Second Card

Where you would have previously handed only one card to an individual, give them two. This allows that first card to function in the same way as before, but that second card has an opportunity to take on a life of it’s own. One of two things will happen with this card: either the individual will keep it, or they will pass it on.

If they keep it, you’ve effectively doubled your face-time with this individual while they are flipping through their cards. If each card has .25 seconds of face-time while the person is flipping through their rolodex, both of your cards together may get .5 seconds- double what any other business card will get.

If they pass it on to a friend or colleague that may be interested in your service, they are helping you spread the word. You’ve now passed out cards to people you haven’t even met!

So whenever you have a chance to include a business card in a transaction- whether in person, or through correspondence- include two. It may just be the unique angle you need to help get you noticed, and give you that extra edge above your competitors. That second card will pique their interest, and THEY will be the one to initiate a conversation with you.

Questions for Reflection:
What do you hope they do with your second business card?
How do your chances improve by handing out multiple cards?
Has anyone ever given you multiple cards? If so, what did you do with the second one?

Building for Tomorrow, Today

03 July 2012 by Laddie F. Hutar

What have you done today? Not last weekend, or your last “productive” day, but this day? If you’re like most people, maybe you had some breakfast, arrived at work, checked your email, or got some real work done. You possibly also checked last night’s baseball score, checked your email again, and left a few minutes early for lunch to avoid the line. But you’re not “most people,” are you? That’s why you’re here.

Personal Growth is a big theme here at Hutar Growth Management Institute. It enables us to do things tomorrow we can’t do today. What will your little victory be today? Will you get started on that stats report? Finish up a presentation? Maybe you will learn something new that will help you later. Whatever it is, get it done! That’s another ten minutes you will have free tomorrow. If you apply this same principal tomorrow, you’ll be ahead by twenty minutes. This time next week, you’ll be ahead almost an hour. Each day you are building your business of tomorrow.

This is analogous to exercise. Everyone want a “beach body” – the results of daily exercise and an A+ diet. How many actually put forth the effort to get there? You can start today. Tell yourself you’ll make today your first visit. If you continually put something off, your future will simply be a series of todays, and you’ll make very little progress towards your goal. Any day is a good day for your new start.

This is your call to action! Here. Now. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today!

Make your goal and go through with it! Crack the books and get that new marketing initiative started now! Don’t tell yourself you’ll get to it eventually. You won’t.

Our motto is “Success Consists of a Series of Little Daily Victories,” and it is true. You are investing for yourself, but not by yourself. We are here to help you. Let us know what your daily success is, and we may feature it in a future blog. Let us know how you plan to get ahead. We would love to hear from you. Let us know what your next step will be in your Outstanding Success Plan.

Questions for Reflection:
How much did you grow today?
Do you accept our challenge of a small victory every day?
How are you investing in yourself?

Give to Get

19 June 2012 by Laddie F. Hutar

Many years ago, as I was coming out from my office in the 100-story John Hancock Building in downtown Chicago, I found myself hailing a taxi in the City of Big Shoulders. As the taxi pulled up, I put my briefcase in the back, told him my destination, and made myself comfortable for the trip. As I watched the high-rise buildings of Chicago pass by, I heard something that helped me realize how I could help this gentleman. Or, as is the case here, didn’t hear something. This particular taxi driver was silent for most of the trip, other than asking me my destination.

Now, I’m in the growth business, and I’m always interested in helping those around me make the most of their job. In a service-oriented job like this, making a connection with the customer is important; I call this the “give to get” connection. You want to get tips? Then give the customer a reason. Communicate with them. I initiated the conversation, and after a little small-talk, asked, “Would you like to make more money?” After his affirmation, I told him of the nine magic words that will raise his income, if he used it when people entered his cab:

“Welcome to Chicago. The friendliest city in the world!”

As the drive came to an end, I thanked him, got out of the taxi and paid my fare. Unbeknownst to me, our paths would cross again.

I travel frequently, and one day down the road, I actually ran into the same cabbie. This time, he was using the magic words, and making conversation. He remembered me. I asked him how business was, and if his new introduction was helping him. I’ll never forget his reply: “My tips have gone up 20%.”

That is the power of “Give to Get.”

Questions for Reflection:
How will you Give to Get?
What do you feel this would do for your brand reputation?
What ‘magic words’ would you give to yourself right now?

Want. Work. Get.

05 June 2012 by Laddie F. Hutar

This is our little angular friend. It’s like a pyramid, but not quite. So what is it? It’s a reminder. It’s something to work for. It’s something you can print off and use to keep yourself on target.

It’s a ladder of sorts, only the base is the goal. If you haven’t read the previous post, now would be a good time to familiarize yourself with the concept.

There are many examples of people who exhibit Want-Work-Get. You might even be able to think of a few in your industry. Perhaps competitors. Maybe people you’ve read about. What keeps these people going? If you answered ‘passion for what they do,’ you would be correct.

Achieve Your Goal
Some people do their job to get through the day only so they have a reason to relax at night. They accomplish their goal- they get through the day, and relax at night. Those who really have a passion for what they do certainly have loftier goals than that.

What are your goals?
What are you actually trying to achieve?
What is your OSP?
What the heck is an OSP?

An OSP stands for Outstanding Success Plan. This is different than an ordinary, run-of-the-mill Success Plan. Anyone can have a Success Plan. Maybe you define success by surviving your day. Maybe it means you completed your project the day it was due. Doesn’t sound very Outstanding does it? What you need to do is go above and beyond if you want to succeed above and beyond. This won’t be easy, but if you have passion for what you do, and a clear vision of where you want to be, it is doable, and even exciting. It’s one of the first steps to accomplishing what you want to accomplish.

Questions for Reflection:
Do you have passion for what you do?
Are you willing to drop your average, run-of-the-mill Success Plan?
What will you change to make it Outstanding?

Working To Get What You Want, Part II

22 May 2012 by Laddie F. Hutar

If you read Part I, you know that you now receive money in exchange for the services you render for someone else. You have traded this money for your needs, and can start to spend money on wants

What Are Your Wants?
Do you enjoy movies? You now have a little extra money to see a movie or two. Do you enjoy music? Purchase an album. Spend a little more on a meal you like. Go ahead and buy that new iPhone.

It may go without saying that money is a limited resource– that means you only have a specific amount to spend. The good news is that you can get more money!

Everyone Wants Your Vegetables
Remember two weeks ago, when I told you you grew vegetables, and they were the best around? Many times, people are willing to pay more for better quality. Your high quality vegetables have a higher demand than someone else’s lower quality vegetables. People that have a bit more money are willing to pay more for higher quality items, including your vegetables. Goods or services that are more in demand generally have a higher worth on the market than services that are in less demand.

Other People Will Compete With You
What happens if your services in today’s market aren’t as in-demand as you hope? There are two solutions- increase your skills, or increase the time you spend selling your services; both of these mean you should make more money.

There’s a catch- this applies to other people as well. If one of your competitors increases his gardening skills, they may eventually have better quality vegetables than you, people will demand the higher quality vegetables, and the value of your goods may go down. This is is why it is important to keep your skills high, and put in the work it requires to create high-quality goods and services.

Congratulations!
You’ve now learned the nuts and bolts of an economy, and how you fit in! If you WORK, you can pay for what you NEED, and what you WANT. Work is the foundation of getting what you need and want. Your work helps you accumulate wealth and possessions. Since you have money, other people sell you things and accumulate their own wealth and possessions. You are an integral part of how the world works. Find something you want to do, become good at it, work hard, and you will be rewarded.

What will you do now?
How will you increase your skills to compete?
What is this graphic about, and how will it help me?
Find this all out, and more next time…. on Hutar Growth Tuesday!

Working To Get What You Want, Part I

08 May 2012 by Laddie F. Hutar

We all know we need to “work for a living.” Why is that? What does it get us? Let’s
break it down to the basics today, from the beginning:

The Olden Days
Back before formal currency like dollars, euros, or yen, people bartered goods and services in exchange for other goods and services. This proved popular for a long time, but what if the good or service you were willing to sell was not something the other party wanted or needed? Let’s illustrate this with an example. You grow vegetables in
your vegetable garden. Your veggies are the talk of the town, and everyone wants them with their dinner. I raise chickens. People love my chickens, and also enjoy them once in a while for dinner. Since I concentrate on the chicken industry, I do not grow vegetables as well as you do, but I would like to have them with my dinner. I am willing to trade two of my chickens for five pounds of your spinach, carrots, and sprouts. This way, you have some chicken, and I have some veggies. No problem.

Bartering with Multiple People
But there is one problem- you’re a vegetarian! You don’t eat chicken!
In the bartering system, this means I’m stuck. You don’t want what I offer, so I can’t get any vegetables. At the least, it makes my job harder; I must barter with someone else that wants chicken, and they might give me fruit. I then trade this fruit to you for vegetables. I get what I want, but I must trade with multiple people to get it.

Modern Day
With modern currency, I don’t have to engage in direct trade with you.
Someone has decided that my service (or my chickens) are worth a certain amount to
them. If I agree on this price, they trade their money for my service. Since this money is
universal, I can then trade it for other goods or services. I don’t have to worry whether or not you like my service, since I can trade a universal currency that everyone accepts. We have now defined my job- trading my service (or chickens) for money. Money I can use to buy other goods and services from people.

Dollars And Sense
Great! So I have money! Why is that so important?
Unless you live on the street with no possessions and don’t eat, you need something to
trade to others for their goods and services- including shelter, clothing, food, and
medicine. These are your needs, and they are not free. Just as you may be providing
services for others to enjoy for money, they are providing these things to you for money. The more money you make, the more goods and services you are able to
trade for. The more your services are in demand, the more money people are willing to
give to you for them. As demand for your services increase, and your needs are met, you
can start spending your money on wants.

What kind of things can you buy?
Are your vegetables really the talk of the town?
Find out next time in Part II….. on Hutar Growth Tuesday!

A Series of Little Daily Victories

24 April 2012 by Laddie F. Hutar

There’s two ways to succeed in small business:
1. Trial and Error [takes time, high rate of failure]
2. Buy Smarts [high rate of success]

My name is Laddie Hutar, and I sell small business smarts. There are plenty of places you could go for business advice, both on the web and offline. However, how many of them have been helping small businesses grow for 45 years? How many of them have a client-base that has grown in value by over $500 million dollars?

I have specialized in Growth Management Development with my Continued Improved Growth Program for small businesses for 45 years. Since graduating with a Masters of Business Administration from Harvard Business School and starting the Famous Executives Management Institute in 1967, I have developed over 25,000 solutions for businesses I work with, and put in over 77,000 consulting hours in the battlefield of business. You won’t find another with those qualifications, because there are none. Growth Development is more than just dollars and cents- it’s also about personal growth.

As we reach Summer of 2012, unemployment is above 8%, and I believe it will go up from here. Disposable income is disappearing, and new tax regulation will make it even harder to conduct business for those precious few dollars left. In 1864, British philosopher Herbert Spencer coined the term “survival of the fittest” in response to Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. Not in the past 30 years has it been as relevant in the business world as it is today. Of the small businesses in operation today, we will lose over 15% within the next five years. Will you be one of the surviving businesses? Not only can you survive, but you can thrive in this economy. I can show you how.

I hope to see you back here twice a month. I will be updating with timely posts every other Tuesday; these will come to be known as Hutar Growth Tuesdays. Be ready for news bits, statistics, marketing ideas, and how to combat the new obstacles coming your way. Buckle up- the future will be a bumpy ride; there will be many losers. You don’t have to be one of them. You can win by coming back every 14 days for Hutar Growth Tuesdays. See you in a fortnight.
